If your state or city limits cash bail, it could lose federal crime money. To keep that money, states would have to keep cash bail as an option for anyone charged with certain crimes. That list runs from murder, rape, and robbery to vandalism, looting, rioting, and running from police. The money at stake comes from the Byrne grant program, which helps pay for police, courts, and crime prevention. The Attorney General could not give, renew, or extend those grants to a state that limits cash bail. The cutoff would start the first October 1 after the bill becomes law. It has not passed the House yet.
