刑事司法与正当程序
Today, the gap between an attack and the victim's death can block a federal murder charge. The bill would remove that barrier for acts that happen after it becomes law.
Federal first-degree murder carries death or life in prison. When the victim dies more than a year and a day after the act, the bill would let a judge give any number of years instead.
A death sentence would still be possible, but only for deaths within a year and a day of the act. Prosecutors would have to prove that timing beyond a reasonable doubt.
关于本法案的更多内容
Most people would never run into this change. It matters if someone you love was attacked and died long afterward, in a case federal prosecutors handle. Right now, the time between the attack and the death can block a federal murder charge. The bill would remove that time limit, so charges could be brought no matter how long the victim lived. Some limits stay in place. The death penalty would stay off the table if the victim died more than a year and a day later. Prosecutors would have to prove that shorter timing beyond a reasonable doubt. For those later deaths, first-degree murder could bring any number of years in prison, not just life. The new rule would cover only acts that happen after the bill becomes law. It passed the Senate in March 2025 and still needs the House.
