Data Science and Literacy Act of 2026

YourVoice.Now Summary

Transparency & Accountability

Schools and colleges could apply for new federal grants to teach data science, once Congress agrees to fund them.

Transparency & Accountability

Public report evaluating the grant program — due within 5 years

The Secretary of Education and the Institute of Education Sciences would each have to publish a public report on how well the new grant program worked, including recommendations for expanding it, within five years of the first grant being awarded.

New public data on STEM teachers per state

The National Center for Education Statistics would add a new item to its regular reporting: how many STEM teachers work in each state's secondary schools, what they teach, their training, and their race, ethnicity, and gender — collected no more than once every five years.

More about this bill

Most people would see no direct effect from this bill. It sets up permission to spend up to $10 million a year from 2027 through 2031 on a new grant program. But permission is not the same as money. Congress would still have to approve the actual funding later, in a separate bill. School districts, state agencies, tribal schools, colleges, and groups of them together could apply for grants. Winners could use the money for new data-science classes, teacher training, or equipment, for students from pre-kindergarten through college. Equipment cannot use more than 15% of a grant. Schools that get a grant would report twice a year on the students they serve. They would break down the data by race, gender, and whether students qualify for free lunch. The Department of Education would publish a report on how well the program worked, within five years of the first grant. The bill also tells the government to start counting, every five years, how many science and math teachers each state's high schools employ.

Congressional Summary

Data Science and Literacy Act of 2026 This bill establishes a grant program for data literacy education and requires additional reporting regarding secondary school teachers. Specifically, the bill directs the Department of Education to award grants to educational agencies, tribal schools, institutions of higher education, or consortia of such entities for programs to increase access to and support for data literacy, data science, and statistics education. The Institute of Education Sciences must evaluate the grant program within five years after the first grant is made to assess its effectiveness in improving access to data science and literacy. Additionally, the bill requires the National Center for Education Statistics to collect and report information on the number of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teachers in secondary schools in each state.
