YourVoice.Now Summary
Up to five grants for preschool-to-5th-grade dual language classes in low-income schools — $15 million in 2027
The details
Up to five school partnerships could win federal grants to run dual language programs. In these classes, children learn in English and a second language for at least half the school day. The programs would run from preschool through fifth grade in high-need schools. That means at least half the students come from low-income families, such as those who get free or reduced-price lunch. Kids still learning English would be among those served. Congress would allow $15 million for 2027, plus whatever sums are needed for the next four years. Each grant would last up to five years. A local school district would have to team up with a preschool or Head Start program and an expert group. The Education Department would set aside $250,000 a year for an outside group to help the programs and study how well they work. Most families would see no change unless their child's school wins one of the grants.
