YourVoice.Now Summary
Your MoneyCitrus and other high-value crop growers could get federal payments after droughts, storms, fires, or freezes.
Your Money
The Agriculture Department may set up a program to pay growers for lost sales, quality, or harvest. Drought, fire, floods, freezes, and other listed disasters all count. It does not have to, and the bill sets no amount or limit.
More about this bill
If you grow citrus or another high-value crop, the Agriculture Department could pay you after a disaster hurts your crop. Payments would cover lost sales, lower quality, or a smaller harvest. Covered disasters include drought, wildfire, hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, storms, heat, freezes, smoke, and too much moisture. The program would be optional for the department. It could run through block grants to states and territories. The bill adds to a farm disaster section of law that already pays for lost livestock and for orchard trees that die. That section does not pay for lost crop sales. The bill does not define a high-value crop. It sets no dollar amount, payment limit, or funding source. Most other households would see no change.
