Protect America’s Lands Act

YourVoice.Now Summary

Corporate BenefitsEnvironment

Stock exchanges could not trade shares of companies set up to manage land for conservation — or their parent firms

Corporate Benefits

Stock exchange trading for land-conservation companies — banned

A company that holds the rights to a piece of land's natural value, and mainly works to protect or restore it, could not have its shares traded on a U.S. stock exchange.

Exchange trading for their parent and sister companies — also banned

The ban reaches any company that controls one of these companies, is controlled by one, or shares the same owner. A larger listed firm that owns one would lose its exchange trading too.

Environment

Raising stock market money for land conservation — exchanges closed to it

These companies exist to manage land for conservation or for use that does not harm it. Their shares could not trade on a stock exchange, which closes one way to raise money for that work.

More about this bill

If you invest, you could not buy shares of land-conservation companies on a U.S. stock exchange. The bill calls them "natural asset companies." Each one holds the rights to the natural value of a set piece of land. Its main job there is to protect, restore, or grow that value, or to use the land without harming it. The ban would also cover any company that owns one of these companies, is owned by one, or shares an owner with one. Stock exchanges registered with the SEC could not handle trades in any of their shares. No such ban is in the law today. The bill sets no start date, so it would apply once it becomes law.

Congressional Summary

Protect America’s Lands Act This bill prohibits national securities exchanges from allowing the trade of securities issued by natural asset companies. Natural asset companies are companies that oversee land for conservation, restoration, or for the sustainable management of the natural resources and ecosystem services on that land.

Like reading a bill in plain English?

We're building an app that does this for every bill in Congress and lets you tell your reps how you want them to vote. We're a small team getting ready to launch, and we're trying to show investors that real people want this. Be one of them. Help us get it built. Leave your email and we'll tell you the moment the app is ready.

By default, we'll only email you once — when the app launches. Unless you opt in below, you won't receive anything else. We don't share or sell your email.
