Stopping Political Discrimination in Disaster Assistance Act

YourVoice.Now Summary

Civil Liberties

Federal disaster aid could not turn on your politics — though who gets help, and how much, would stay the same.

Civil Liberties

Protection from political bias in disaster aid — no new penalty

Federal relief staff must treat people fairly. So must the state agencies and charities that help hand out aid. Political affiliation would join that list, but the bill sets no fine and no deadline.

More about this bill

If you apply for federal disaster aid, nothing about who can get help would change. Neither would the amount. Federal law already bars relief workers from treating people differently over things such as race, religion, sex, age, disability, or income. Political affiliation would join that list. The rule covers more than federal staff. State agencies and charities that hand out the aid must follow FEMA's rules to take part. The bill sets no fine, no deadline, and no new right to sue. Most people would notice no change in daily life.

Congressional Summary

Stopping Political Discrimination in Disaster Assistance Act This bill prohibits discrimination on the basis of political affiliation by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and other participating entities (i.e., public or private entities providing or receiving assistance) in carrying out federal major disaster or emergency relief and assistance activities. Current law requires FEMA and other participating entities to provide federal major disaster or emergency relief and assistance without discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, nationality, sex, age, disability, English proficiency, or economic status. The bill adds political affiliation to the classes protected under this requirement.

Like reading a bill in plain English?

We're building an app that does this for every bill in Congress and lets you tell your reps how you want them to vote. We're a small team getting ready to launch, and we're trying to show investors that real people want this. Be one of them. Help us get it built. Leave your email and we'll tell you the moment the app is ready.

By default, we'll only email you once — when the app launches. Unless you opt in below, you won't receive anything else. We don't share or sell your email.
