Project Safe Neighborhoods Reauthorization Act of 2025

YourVoice.Now Summary

Criminal Justice & Due Process

Restarts a $50 million-a-year federal grant for local anti-violence policing through 2030 — and widens what it can buy

Criminal Justice & Due Process

Federal anti-violent-crime grants — up to $50 million a year through 2030

The Project Safe Neighborhoods grants help police, prosecutors, and community groups work together against violent crime. Their spending approval ended after 2021. The bill would allow up to $50 million a year again, from 2026 through 2030.

What the grants can buy — analysts, overtime, technology, task forces

Today the grants pay for things like gun and gang crime programs and youth violence work. The bill would let them also pay for crime analysts and for overtime for police, prosecutors, and their aides. They could also buy technology used to cut violent crime, and help task forces that cover more than one area.

More about this bill

Local police and prosecutors could get federal grant money to fight violent crime for five more years. Congress could spend up to $50 million a year on the Project Safe Neighborhoods grant program from 2026 through 2030. The program's spending approval ran out after 2021. It brings together federal, state, local, and tribal police with prosecutors and community groups. It runs in all 94 federal court districts. The grants could also pay for new things. They could pay to hire crime analysts, who study crime data to plan a response. They could cover overtime for police, prosecutors, and their aides. They could pay for crime-fighting technology, and for task forces that work across city or county lines. Each year, the Attorney General would tell Congress how each area spent its money. The report would also cover outreach work and the violent crimes in each area. Most people would not see a direct change in daily life.
