More about this bill
If you invest through a broker or a mutual fund, your investor paperwork would go online by default. That includes account statements, trade receipts, fund reports, and voting papers. You could still ask for paper at any time. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC, the agency that oversees investing) would have one year to write the rules. Before the switch, your firm would mail you one paper letter about it. Paper would stop within 180 days after that. For up to two years, you would also get a yearly paper reminder that you can switch back. Firms would have to catch and fix emails that fail to arrive. The SEC would set rules on how easy the files are to read and save. These mailings would also be exempt from one section of the federal e-signature law. If the SEC misses its deadline, firms could switch on their own under the same terms.
