More about this bill
If police or jail officers respond to a mental health crisis in your family, they could have more training in calming things down. The Justice Department could give grants to state and local police and jail agencies. The money would pay for crisis response classes, plus travel and lodging to attend them. Classes would cover drug use, suicide risk, and mental illness. They would teach ways to calm tense moments and keep everyone safe. Health experts and people who have lived with mental illness would help design them. To pay for it, the Justice Department could set aside up to $10 million a year. The money would come from its main grant fund for local police (the Byrne grant program). Agencies that get grants would report each year on how many officers they trained. Grants must add to local spending, not replace it. No more than 3% of a grant may go to overhead. The grants only happen if Congress provides the money.
