Accredited Investor Definition Review Act

YourVoice.Now Summary

Your Money

Writes into law that some finance license holders count as accredited investors — SEC must review the list every 5 years

Your Money

Finance-license path to accredited investor status — written into law

Some offers to sell investments are limited to accredited investors. One way to qualify is a net worth over $1 million, not counting your home. An SEC rule from 2020 also lets holders of some finance licenses in. The bill would put that path into federal law, and the list would have to keep the licenses named in 2020.

Licenses that make you an accredited investor — SEC must add similar ones

The SEC would review the list of qualifying licenses within 18 months, then at least every five years. It would have to add licenses that show similar money skill and knowledge. It could also adjust the list to protect investors.

More about this bill

Some people with finance job licenses would keep a legal status that opens up certain investment offers. Some offers to sell investments are limited to "accredited investors." Federal securities law sets who counts. One way to qualify is a net worth over $1 million, not counting your home. Since 2020, an SEC rule has also let people with some finance licenses qualify. The bill would write that license path into federal law. A later SEC rule could not simply take it away. The SEC would also have to review the list of licenses that count. The first review would come within 18 months, then at least every five years. Each time, it would have to add licenses that show the same kind of money know-how. It could also change the list to protect investors or the public.
