More about this bill
If your town has a small police department, it could get federal help to become accredited. Accreditation means an outside professional group checks a police agency against its written standards. The Justice Department would have to start this grant program within 90 days of the bill becoming law. Local police agencies with fewer than 350 employees could apply. Each would have to show financial need and list the amount it wants. The money could be used only to get accredited or renewed, such as for fees and on-site review charges. The bill says each agency that applies this way gets a grant. The total is $10 million for fiscal year 2025, which has already ended. That money would stay available until it is spent. One group the bill names as an example is CALEA (the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies).
