Criminal Justice & Due Process

Police training to calm tense situations — federal grants after one year

The Justice Department would create a role-play course on de-escalation, use of force, and crisis response. States, cities, and tribes could then get grants to train officers with it, paid from money the department already has.

More about this bill

Police in your area could get new training on calming tense situations before force is used. Within one year, the Justice Department's community policing office would build a training course. Officers would practice with live role-play that copies real calls. Topics include de-escalation (calming things down), use of force and deadly force, crisis response, officer safety, and stress. After that first year, states, cities, tribes, and other groups could apply for grants to offer the course. No new money is set aside. The Justice Department would pay for it from funds it already has but has not spent. Each grant winner would report back after one year. The office would report to Congress every year on how many officers in each state were trained.
