EnvironmentFederal building energy reviews would look at insulating pipes and ducts as a way to save energy and water.
Environment
When an agency checks a federal building for ways to save energy and water, it would look at wrapping pipes and ducts. The wrap must meet a common building energy standard.
More about this bill
Most people would see no change in daily life. The bill deals with how federal agencies look for ways to waste less energy in their own buildings. It adds "mechanical insulation" to the federal energy law. That means wraps and coverings for pipes, ducts, and gear in heating, cooling, and other building systems. To count, the insulation must cut energy loss. It must also meet a common building energy standard called ASHRAE 90.1. Agency energy and water reviews of federal buildings would then list this insulation as one way to save, where it fits. A House committee approved the bill; the full House has not voted.
Congressional Summary
Federal Mechanical Insulation Act The bill directs federal agencies to identify energy saving and water saving measures, such as the installation of mechanical insulation property, in certain annual energy and water evaluations of federal buildings. Thus, the bill allows the installation of mechanical insulation property (e.g., thermal insulation) to be considered an energy or water efficiency measure that may be used in federal buildings under the National Energy Conservation Policy Act.
