YourVoice.Now Summary
New Justice Department grants would fund local teams that help children exposed to violence and trauma
The details
Children who live through violence or other trauma could get help from new local response teams. The Justice Department would give grants to set up these teams. It would work with the Department of Health and Human Services. States, cities, counties, Indian Tribes, and community groups could apply. Congress could provide up to $10 million a year for 2026 through 2029. A team could set steps for police and others to follow when they meet a child exposed to trauma. The goal is to get the child to services. A team could also link police with mental health and crisis workers. It could set up referrals so the child's family can get mental health care or drug treatment. Grants could also pay for trauma training for first responders, child welfare workers, and schools. Most people would see no change unless their community wins a grant.
