Labor Department staff must be trained to spot human trafficking and refer cases — program due by April 2027.

The details

Most people will see no change in daily life. The Labor Department must now train some of its own staff to spot human trafficking on the job. The program must start within 180 days of becoming law, or by about April 2027. The Labor Secretary picks which staff get trained, based on their jobs. For Wage and Hour Division staff, the Secretary must consider needs in states where oppressive child labor has grown a lot. Federal wage law uses that term for certain jobs held by children under 16, or hazardous jobs held by older teens. Training can be in person or online. It shows how to spot victims and suspected traffickers. It also sets a clear path for sending cases to the Justice Department and other authorities. That path must follow best practices for protecting victims' rights. What staff learn must also respect privacy laws. Staff also rate the training after they finish it. Here, human trafficking means its most serious forms under federal law. That covers sex trafficking by force, fraud, or threats, or of anyone under 18. It also covers forcing people to work through force, fraud, or threats. Each year, the Secretary must report to Congress on how well the training works. The report counts how many staff finished it and how many cases were sent on. It also explains how the department tracks what happens to those cases.
