If you give to a federal campaign online, a pre-checked box could no longer sign you up for repeat charges. Donors would have to take a clear step to agree before any donation repeats. Leaving a box checked would not count as agreeing. The rule would cover campaign committees and groups that pay for election ads. Each time a repeat donation goes through, you would get a receipt listing the terms. It would show the date and amount of your next charge. Every message about the donation would have to tell you how to cancel. If you ask to stop, the group would have to cancel all future charges right away. The Federal Election Commission oversees campaign money rules. The change would take effect once it issues rules to carry this out. If that has not happened within 180 days of the bill becoming law, the change starts anyway.
