YourVoice.Now Summary
The FCC's public broadband map would add a layer showing where farms are — no new funding, no change in service.
The details
Most people would see no change in daily life from this bill. It does not pay for new internet service, and it does not change who gets service. It changes what one public government map shows. If you farm or live in farm country, here is the change. The FCC's National Broadband Map shows where high-speed internet is available. Within 180 days of the bill becoming law, the FCC would have to add a new layer to that map. The layer would show where farmland and other farm areas are, and the FCC would have to keep it current. The FCC would build it with the Department of Agriculture (USDA), using farm-location data USDA already has. It would also consult the Commerce Department's telecom office (NTIA), the states, and other groups it picks. The bill's title points to the aim: helping planners see which farm areas still lack internet.
Congressional Summary
Data Broadband Reporting and Integration for Deployment in Geographically Essential Areas Act or the Data BRIDGE Act This bill requires the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to update the National Broadband Map to include data on the location of agricultural areas as a layer of the map and to maintain this data in the map moving forward. (The map depicts the availability of broadband internet service across the United States.) In incorporating this data, the FCC must consult with (1) the Department of Agriculture, including with respect to existing data on the location of agricultural areas; and (2) with the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, states, and other relevant stakeholders.
