Identity theft victims get one Social Security contact team to see their case through — starting April 2027

Your Money

ID theft victims' Social Security contact — one team until solved

Say someone misuses your number, or your card gets lost in the mail. Starting in April 2027, one trained Social Security team stays on your case until it is fixed. It works with other offices to fix things fast.

More about this bill

If someone misuses your Social Security number, the Social Security Administration (SSA) must give you one point of contact. That contact handles your case from start to finish. The same help goes to people whose Social Security card is lost on its way to them. Misuse includes someone using your number to claim benefits, messing with your SSA records, or leading you to ask for a new number. The point of contact is a team of specially trained SSA workers. They track your case until it is solved and work with other offices to fix problems fast. Team members can change, but SSA must keep your records and case history together. It must also tell you when needed. This is now Public Law 119-119, which became law on October 7, 2026. The rule starts 180 days after that, in early April 2027.
