Workers & Jobs
Public medical schools in states short on family doctors could get grants. They would train students to be family doctors. The goal is for them to later work in rural, Tribal, or other areas with too few doctors.
More about this bill
If you live in a rural, Tribal, or underserved area, this bill aims to train more family doctors to work near you. A federal health agency would give grants to public medical schools to train students in primary care (everyday checkups and care). Only schools in the top quarter of states for expected shortages of these doctors could apply. Schools would train students in local communities. They would prepare students for primary care training after medical school. They could also give scholarships. They could recruit students who come from these areas. Schools could team up with Tribes, rural clinics, and community health centers. Schools get priority if their state has at least 2 Tribes and they have or plan such a partnership. Each grant would be at least $1 million a year for up to 5 years. The agency may ask schools to add up to 10% of the federal amount from their own funds. The bill allows $75 million a year from 2026 through 2028.
Congressional Summary
Medical Student Education Authorization Act of 2025 This bill provides statutory authority for the Medical Student Education Program, which provides matching grants for educating and training medical students and encouraging them to serve as primary care physicians in tribal, rural, or medically underserved communities. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) must award the grants to public institutions of higher education located in states that rank in the top quartile of states based on their projected shortage of primary care physicians. In awarding the grants, HRSA must give priority to recipients that (1) are located in states with two or more federally recognized Indian tribes, and (2) have established or plan to establish a strategic partnership to support the implementation of the grant.
