The Department of Veterans Affairs clinic in Riverhead, New York would be renamed. It would become the Private First Class Garfield M. Langhorn VA Clinic. Langhorn was born in Cumberland, Virginia in 1948 and grew up in Riverhead. He graduated from Riverside High School in 1967 and worked for Suffolk County before being drafted in 1968. He served as a radio operator with the 17th Cavalry Regiment in Vietnam. On January 15, 1969, his unit went in near Plei Djereng to rescue two downed helicopter pilots. Both pilots were already dead, and the unit came under heavy attack. Surrounded, Langhorn called in air support and returned fire from the perimeter. When a grenade landed near wounded soldiers, he threw himself on it and absorbed the blast. Every federal record referring to the clinic would use the new name.
