The details
The Department of Veterans Affairs medical center in Northport, New York would be renamed. It would become the Navy (SEAL) Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy VA Medical Center. Murphy grew up in Patchogue on Long Island, roughly ten miles from the hospital. He died on June 28, 2005 while leading a four-man SEAL team in Afghanistan during Operation Red Wings. Murphy left cover under enemy fire to call for help for his team, and was killed doing it. Sixteen more service members died in the rescue attempt when their helicopter was shot down. He received the Medal of Honor, the first awarded for combat in Afghanistan. It was also the Navy's first since the Vietnam War. Every law, map, and federal record referring to the center would use the new name.
