Environment

Funding limit for city farms and compost — doubles to $50M yearly

More about this bill

Cities and suburbs could see more federal money for community gardens, rooftop farms, and indoor farms. The bill raises the yearly funding limit for the Agriculture Department's urban farming office. The limit would go from $25 million to $50 million a year, for 2025 through 2030. The old limit ran out after 2023. The office gives competitive grants to nonprofits, local governments, tribes, and K-12 schools. The office also runs pilot projects that help cities make compost and cut food waste. Its advisory group of farmers and experts would keep reporting to Congress through 2030. So would the Agriculture Secretary, on a trial of farm committees in urban and suburban counties. The bill sets a ceiling on spending. Congress would still need to approve the actual money each year.
