Current stage on Congress.gov: Introduced in House.
Counties in states with large amounts of federal forest land have historically received a share of federal timber revenues to fund local schools and roads, but as logging on federal lands declined, those payments dropped sharply. The Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act established an alternative payment system to make up the difference. The bill would extend that program through fiscal year 2026 and make sure payments for fiscal years 2024 and 2025 — which may have been delayed or partially covered by older formulas — are paid out within 45 days of enactment. It also extends the authority for communities and resource advisory committees to use those funds on local conservation and road projects through 2028 and 2029 respectively.
