More about this bill
If you work in mental health and owe student loans, the federal government could help pay them off. In return, you would agree to work full time for up to six years in an area short on mental health workers. For each year you serve, the government would pay one-sixth of your loan balance. Finishing year six would pay off the rest. The total is capped at $250,000 per person. Many kinds of workers could qualify, such as counselors, social workers, psychologists, psychiatric nurses, and family therapists. Graduate school loans and most federal student loans would count. You could not get this help and another federal loan forgiveness program for the same work. Leaving early would not by itself break the deal, as long as you served the paid years in good faith. Congress could spend up to $25 million a year on this from 2026 through 2035.
