Current stage on Congress.gov: Introduced in House.
The Veteran Suicide Prevention Act would require the VA to conduct a comprehensive review of every veteran who received VA care and died by suicide in the five years before the law's enactment, completing that review within 18 months. The review would examine how many veterans died, their demographics, what medications they were taking at the time of death (including any drugs with "black box" warnings — the FDA's strongest safety alert — or drugs linked to suicidal thoughts), patterns in prescribing practices, and which VA facilities had the highest combined prescription and suicide rates. A public report with findings and recommendations must be submitted to Congress within 30 days of completing the review. The goal is to identify whether VA prescribing patterns may be contributing to veteran suicides.
