YourVoice.Now Summary

Environment

Conservation help for Driftless Area farms — $5 million a year

The Agriculture Department would pay farmers and landowners in this Midwest region to cut erosion, restore prairies and woods, and repair cold-water trout streams. The money runs from 2027 through 2031 and comes out of an existing conservation fund.

More about this bill

If you farm or own land in the Driftless Area of the Midwest, you could get federal help to stop soil loss. The help would also fix trout streams. The Agriculture Department would run this new program with $5 million a year from 2027 through 2031. The money would come out of an existing farm conservation fund, not new spending. Help could be cash, expert advice, or payments for land easements (deals that limit how land is used). It would pay for ground cover, healthier woods, prairie and grassland work, and stream bank repair. Local groups would also get help to teach landowners about soil health and grazing.

Congressional Summary

Driftless Area Landscape Conservation Initiative Act or the DALCI Act This bill reestablishes an initiative within the Department of Agriculture (USDA) to assist farmers in fighting erosion and restoring cold water stream corridors in the Driftless Area of the Midwestern United States. (The Driftless Area is a region in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa that was never covered by glaciers.) USDA must provide assistance to grassroots partnerships to educate landowners and operators on the benefits of climate-smart agriculture, soil health, and holistic grazing.
