YourVoice.Now Summary
Workers & JobsThe Indian Health Service's leader would become an Assistant Secretary — day-to-day care would not change.
Workers & Jobs
Federal executive pay runs from level one, the highest, down to level five. The job that runs the Indian Health Service would move from level five to level four, along with the new title.
The new Assistant Secretary could pick a deputy, but only if the Health and Human Services Secretary approves. The same new paragraph would also let that official use other department staff to run the Service.
More about this bill
If you get care through the Indian Health Service, your care would not change. No clinic, benefit, or cost is touched. What changes is a job title inside the government. The head of the Indian Health Service would become an Assistant Secretary for Indian Health. That job would report straight to the head of Health and Human Services. The new post would sit one pay level higher than the director job it replaces. Whoever is running the Service the day before would step into the new title. No fresh Senate vote would be needed for that person. The Assistant Secretary could also name a deputy, if the Secretary agrees. Most people would see no change in daily life.
