Child Suicide Prevention Act

YourVoice.Now Summary

Gun LawsTransparency & Accountability

Funds suicide-prevention training for health workers who treat young people — including talks about safe gun storage.

Gun Laws

Free or low-cost gun locks — for homes with anyone under 26

Grant winners could spend up to 15% of their grant on locks that keep a gun from firing, and must show each home how to use them. Gun safes and lock boxes are not part of the bill's definition.

Health workers taught to discuss gun storage — with patients' families

Both grant programs pay to teach doctors, nurses, and health students how to talk with young patients and their families about safe gun storage. The lessons also cover state and federal gun laws.

Transparency & Accountability

Yearly grant reports — posted publicly on the HHS website

Every group that gets a grant must report each year through 2029 on what it did, and HHS must post those reports online. HHS must also send Congress a summary with advice by the end of 2029.

More about this bill

Doctors, nurses, and other health workers could get new training to spot young people at risk of suicide. The bill covers anyone under age 26. Within a year, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) would start giving out grants. Groups such as states, tribes, hospitals, health departments, nonprofits, and colleges could apply. The money would train health workers to screen for risk, talk with families about storing guns safely, and send young people to other help. The bill allows $20 million for this over 2027 through 2030. Grant winners could spend up to 15% of their money on free or low-cost gun locks. These would go to homes where someone under 26 lives, along with advice on how to use them. A second program, with $10 million, would pay medical, nursing, and mental health schools to teach suicide prevention and safe gun storage. HHS would also build a public website on these topics. The training would cover risk factors the bill names, such as drug or alcohol use, abuse, bullying, past attempts, and being LGBTQ.

Congressional Summary

Child Suicide Prevention Act This bill requires the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to establish grant programs and set up a website to reduce suicide rates among youth and young adults (those under age 26), including by addressing the use of firearms in suicides and suicide attempts. Specifically, HHS must award grants to states, Indian tribes, health departments, hospitals, or other organizations to train health care providers on lethal means safety (e.g., safe storage of firearms), relevant laws concerning the use and possession of firearms, and other suicide prevention and intervention strategies for youth and young adults. Grantees may use a portion of funds to make secure gun storage or safety devices available to residences with an individual under age 26 who is at risk of suicide. In addition, HHS must award grants to health professional schools to integrate content into their curricula and continuing education programs about suicide prevention strategies and interventions to reduce suicide rates among youth and young adults. The bill also requires HHS to develop and maintain a website that contains information for individuals under age 26, their families, health care providers, and health professional schools concerning suicide prevention and the use of firearms in suicide attempts.
