Federal law already bars people convicted of murder, robbery, bribery, and other crimes from these jobs. Child sex offenses would join that list. The bar runs 13 years after conviction or release from prison, whichever comes later. A convicted person can ask the sentencing court to shorten it to as little as three years. The court must hold a hearing before deciding. The bill does not say which crimes count as a sex offense against a minor. The other crimes on the list are not defined either. The change would start 30 days after the bill became law.
