Teachers' loan forgiveness — same years count toward both federal programs

Today, teaching years used for Teacher Loan Forgiveness (up to $5,000, or $17,500 for some teachers) cannot also count toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness. The bill lets the same years count for both.

More about this bill

If you teach and have federal student loans, you could get two kinds of loan forgiveness for the same years of work. Today you have to choose. Years you use for Teacher Loan Forgiveness cannot also count toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). Teacher Loan Forgiveness takes up to $5,000 off your loans after five years in a row of full-time teaching at certain schools. Math, science, and special education teachers can get up to $17,500. PSLF wipes out the rest of your loan after 120 monthly payments made while working in public service, such as at a public school. The bill ends the rule that blocks using the same work for both. Rules that bar pairing PSLF with some other loan aid programs would stay in place.
