The Portable Ultrasound Reimbursement Equity Act of 2025 would expand Medicare's definition of covered 'diagnostic X-ray tests' (in Section 1861(s)(3) of the Social Security Act) to include diagnostic ultrasound tests as well. The bill also adds a new subsection to Medicare's payment provisions (Section 1834) directing the Secretary of HHS to make separate payments for portable ultrasound transportation and setup services, putting them on the same footing as portable X-ray transportation and setup. Current law treats portable X-ray differently from portable ultrasound for reimbursement purposes — this bill closes that gap. The change applies to services furnished on or after January 1, 2027. Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas leads the bill with Democrat Sen. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire.
