Criminal Justice & Due Process

Armed police officers in K-12 schools — up to $8 billion a year

The Justice Department would give states grants to post armed officers at schools. The money could cover their pay, training, and gear, for fiscal years 2025 through 2034.

Full-time officer at every school — required for local police grants

A local police force that wants the money must sign agreements with its schools. It must promise at least one full-time officer at each public or nonprofit private school in its area.

Targeted & Unrelated Provisions

IRS funding — $80 billion moved to school police grants

The bill takes $80 billion in unspent money Congress gave the IRS in an earlier law. It moves that money to the Justice Department to pay for these grants.

More about this bill

If your child goes to a K-12 school, your state could use federal money to put an armed police officer there full time. The Justice Department would give grants to each state that chooses to take part. The money could pay for officers' wages, training, and gear. Each state's share would match its share of the nation's K-12 students. The money would come from $80 billion in unspent IRS funds from an earlier law (Public Law 117-169). Up to $8 billion a year could go out, for fiscal years 2025 through 2034. Each state's police agency would pass the money to local police. To get it, a local police force must agree to hire at least one full-time officer for every school in its area. That covers public schools and nonprofit private schools. Money a state does not use by the end of the year goes back into the pot for future grants.
