Gun LawsOff-duty and retired police could carry hidden guns in school zones without breaking federal law
Gun Laws
Federal law bans guns in school zones but exempts police acting in their official role. Active and retired officers already allowed under federal law to carry a concealed gun could also carry there, if the gun stays hidden.
Firing a gun in a school zone is a federal crime, with an exemption for police acting in their official role. The same active and retired officers would be added to that exemption.
More about this bill
More police officers could carry a hidden gun near a school without breaking federal law. Today the federal school-zone gun ban exempts police only while they are acting in their official role. The new exemption covers active and retired officers who already have federal permission to carry a concealed gun. Their gun would have to stay hidden. These same officers would also be exempt from the federal ban on firing a gun in a school zone. That exemption does not require the gun to have been hidden. States could still pass their own school-zone gun laws.
Congressional Summary
