Civil Liberties
Federal law already bars keeping people off federal juries over race, religion, sex, and a few other traits. This bill adds sexual orientation and gender identity, for both grand juries and trial juries.
More about this bill
If you are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender, you could not be kept off a federal jury for that reason. Federal law already says no one can be kept off these juries because of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Neither is how much money a person has. This bill adds sexual orientation and gender identity to that list. The rule covers grand juries and trial juries in federal district courts. It also covers the Court of International Trade, a federal court that hears trade cases. State courts are not covered. The bill sets no start date, so the change would take effect once it becomes law.
