More than 59,000 Army nurses and 14,000 Navy nurses volunteered during World War II. They served in field hospitals across six continents, on hospital ships and trains, and as flight nurses. Some were killed when hospitals were bombed, and two groups were taken prisoner in the Philippines. At the time these women held only "relative rank" — they wore the insignia but earned half the pay of men and received no veterans' benefits. A single Congressional Gold Medal would honor all of them collectively. The medal would go to the Smithsonian for display and research, with a recommendation that it also travel to military museums and memorials. The Treasury could strike and sell bronze copies at cost. Minting is paid from the U.S. Mint's own fund, and money from copy sales goes back into it.
