Rural businesses face higher barriers to international markets than companies in urban areas, partly because they are located far from trade-information clusters and major transportation corridors. The Promoting Rural Exports Act would create a National Rural Export Center inside the U.S. Commercial Service to help rural businesses sell their products abroad, plus up to nine regional centers offering local support. The centers would deliver customized market research, product-specific export advice, and tracking of how many rural businesses use the services and the dollar value of exports they generate. Each center would also publish data and best practices on a public website, with preference given to existing Commercial Service offices outside major metropolitan areas.
