Workers & JobsTransparency & AccountabilityRenews and raises federal grants that train health workers for older patients — through 2030
Workers & Jobs
The money pays for grants that train health workers to care for older adults, plus awards for junior faculty who teach geriatrics. That is up from about $40.7 million a year now.
Transparency & Accountability
The new spending limit would run only through budget year 2030. After that, Congress would have to pass another bill to keep the money going.
More about this bill
Federal grants that train health workers to care for older adults would be renewed, with more money behind them. The bill would allow $48,245,000 a year for budget years 2026 through 2030. The current limit is about $40.7 million a year. It last covered budget year 2025. The money goes to schools, hospitals, and training programs, not to patients or their families. It pays for grants that train doctors, nurses, and social workers in caring for older adults. It also pays awards that support junior teaching faculty in geriatrics. You would see no change in what you pay or what Medicare covers. Congress would still have to approve the money in its yearly spending bills.
Congressional Summary
Geriatrics Workforce Improvement ActThis bill reauthorizes through FY2030 (1) the Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program, which provides grants to educate and train health professionals to care for older adults; and (2) the Geriatrics Academic Career Awards, which support the career development of junior faculty at health professions institutions who provide training in geriatrics.
