Extending Expired Cybersecurity Authorities Act

YourVoice.Now Summary

Corporate BenefitsCivil LibertiesTransparency & Accountability

Companies could share cyber attack data with the government without being sued — a shield that would now last to 2035.

Corporate Benefits

Legal shield for data-sharing companies — extended to 2035

A 2015 law lets companies give federal agencies information about cyber threats and keeps them from being sued for it. Under current law that protection now ends December 11, 2026, the latest of several short-term extensions; this proposal would carry it to September 30, 2035.

Legal cover for past threat sharing — backdated to October 2025

The change would count as if it became law on October 1, 2025. Companies that shared threat information after the old powers lapsed would be covered too.

Civil Liberties

Privacy from company-to-government data sharing — nine more years

Cyber threat reports can carry personal information about people. The law does make companies remove personal data not tied to the threat, but the flow to federal agencies would keep running nine years past today's cutoff.

Transparency & Accountability

Regular congressional review of sharing powers — next check 2035

An end date forces Congress to look at these powers again and vote. Moving that date from 2026 to 2035 pushes the next required review out nine years.

More about this bill

Companies could keep handing the federal government details about hackers and computer attacks. A 2015 law allows that sharing and protects companies from being sued over it. Those powers ran out on October 1, 2025. The Senate proposal would restore them through September 30, 2035. What companies send can include personal details about people. The same law makes them strip out personal data not tied to the threat. Both parts would run to 2035. Later laws already brought these powers back through short-term extensions, and the current one runs to December 11, 2026. The proposal also reaches back to October 1, 2025, so sharing during the gap would be covered. The law would also get a new name, the Protecting America from Cyber Threats Act.
