Transparency & AccountabilityBeef would lose its "Product of U.S.A." label — three new labels would show where cattle were born, raised, and processed
Transparency & Accountability
Sellers could pick labels saying the animal was born, raised, or processed in the United States. A "raised" label needs at least 100 days here. None of the labels would be required.
The Agriculture Department would have to write rules ending use of the "Product of U.S.A." label on beef. The new, more specific labels would take its place.
More about this bill
Beef could no longer carry a "Product of U.S.A." label. Instead, the Agriculture Department would create three new labels that tell you more about where the beef came from. Meat sellers could choose whether to use them. The department would have 180 days after the bill becomes law to write the rules. "Processed in U.S.A." would mean the beef was mainly processed at a U.S. plant that federal meat inspectors check. The animal could have been born and raised in another country. "Raised and Processed in U.S.A." would mean the animal lived in the United States for at least 100 days before processing. "Born, Raised, and Processed in U.S.A." would mean the animal was born and raised here, then processed at such a plant.
