YourVoice.Now Summary
Your MoneyVA phone lines would offer a callback when your wait tops 10 minutes, instead of leaving you on hold.
Your Money
Today VA callers wait on the line until someone picks up. Under this bill, if the wait looks longer than 10 minutes, the system would ask whether you want a call back instead.
A recorded message would give you the expected wait before you decide to stay on the line. The VA would have one year after the bill becomes law to add this to its customer service lines.
The bill tells the VA to write whatever rules are needed to get the typical wait under 10 minutes. It sets the goal but leaves the how up to the VA.
More about this bill
Long holds on VA phone lines would come with a new option. If your expected wait is more than 10 minutes, the system would offer to call you back. A message would also tell you the expected wait before you decide to hold. The VA would have one year after this becomes law to set it up. The VA would also have to write guidance aimed at cutting the average wait to 10 minutes or less. Two kinds of lines are left out: the Veterans Crisis Line and hospital emergency lines. Those would work the way they do now. Veterans, their families, and anyone else who calls the VA would notice this first. It is still in committee, so nothing has changed yet.
Congressional Summary
This bill requires the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to implement automated systems for their customer phone lines that inform callers of the expected wait time and that offer callbacks for wait times of more than 10 minutes. The VA must also issue guidance to reduce the average wait time to no more than 10 minutes.
