An officer would have six months from the date the firearm is retired to make the purchase. The officer must be in good standing with the agency that employed them. Retired officers count as well. The price would be salvage value, based on the firearm's age and condition. Salvage value means what an asset is worth once it is no longer useful to its owner. Machine guns are excluded, unless lawfully possessed before the 1986 federal restriction took effect.
