Your child on CHIP could not be cut off from dental care after hitting a dollar cap. CHIP is the health plan for kids in families with modest income. States would no longer be allowed to set yearly or lifetime caps on dental benefits. Today a state can stop paying at its limit, and the family covers the rest. Dental-only coverage would also stop being a state choice. A child whose health plan leaves out dental could get CHIP dental on top of it. But that add-on could not be a better deal than full CHIP. A state could not give those kids wider dental benefits or lower costs than kids on full CHIP get. Both changes would start six months after the bill became law.

Ensuring Kids Have Access to Medically Necessary Dental Care Act This bill modifies dental coverage under the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Specifically, the bill prohibits lifetime or annual limits on CHIP dental coverage. It also requires states to offer dental-only supplemental coverage under CHIP to children who have other health insurance but are otherwise eligible for CHIP (i.e., wraparound coverage); such coverage is currently at the option of the state.
