K–12 AI Literacy and Readiness Act of 2026

YourVoice.Now Summary

Schools could use an existing federal grant to teach students about AI and train teachers to use it — no new money.

The details

Schools could spend part of an existing federal grant on teaching students to use artificial intelligence (AI) safely and responsibly. The same grant could also pay to train teachers, librarians, and other school staff to use AI and teach it. No new money is added. No school would have to do this. The grant already pays for things like science and arts classes and school technology. Current law also lets it fund "other" courses that round out a student's education. This bill adds AI by name to the lists of allowed uses. Here, AI means computer systems that make predictions, suggestions, or decisions. If you have a child in a public K–12 school, you might see new AI lessons or teacher training. That depends on whether your state or school district chooses to spend the grant that way.

Congressional Summary

K-12 AI Literacy and Readiness Act of 2026 This bill authorizes states and local educational agencies (LEAs) to use Student Support and Academic Enrichment Grants for programs and activities that support instruction on the use of artificial intelligence (AI). For example, LEAs may use these grants to provide teachers, school librarians, administrators, and others with the knowledge and skills to use (and teach the use of) AI safely, effectively, and responsibly, including through professional development.
