Student Loan Forgiveness for Farmers and Ranchers Act

YourVoice.Now Summary

Your Money

Farm and ranch workers could have federal student loans erased after 10 years of payments while working full-time.

Your Money

Farm workers' federal student loans erased — after 120 monthly payments

You would need to work full-time on a farm or ranch for each of the 120 payments. Only payments made after the bill becomes law count. What you still owe at the end would be canceled.

Who qualifies — new, veteran, minority, women, and other underrepresented farmers

You qualify if you are a new or veteran farmer when you sign up. You also qualify if your group has faced racial, ethnic, or gender bias. So do groups the Education Department finds have too few farmers, such as women.

Removed after long breaks from farm work — over 3 or 7 years

If you join before age 40, you lose your spot after more than 7 years in total away from full-time farm work. The limit is 3 years if you join at 40 or older. Time on active military duty does not count. Once out, you could rejoin only in rare cases.

Income-based plans, the 10-year standard plan, and the Repayment Assistance Plan would all count. Whatever you still owe at the end would be canceled. Loans in default would not qualify. Not every farm worker could join. When you sign up, you would need to be a new farmer or a veteran farmer. Farmers from groups that have faced racial, ethnic, or gender bias would also qualify. So would people from groups the Education Department finds are underrepresented in farming, such as women or minorities. You would lose your spot if you spent too long out of full-time farm work. The limit is more than 7 years in total if you joined before age 40. It is more than 3 years if you joined at 40 or older. Time on active military duty would not count against you. The Education Department would have 180 days to write the rules. The bill was introduced in the Senate in September 2026 and sent to committee.
