Judicial Ethics Enforcement Act of 2026

YourVoice.Now Summary

Transparency & Accountability

An ethics investigator for federal judges and Supreme Court justices — it could probe and report, but not punish.

Transparency & Accountability

Watchdog over federal judges — Supreme Court justices included

A new Inspector General could look into misconduct by judges and justices. It could also look for waste and fraud in the courts. It would report to the Chief Justice and Congress. It could not punish judges or review their rulings.

Investigator's power to demand testimony and records — by subpoena

The Inspector General could order people to testify and hand over papers. A court could enforce that order. The office could also get records kept by the courts' own offices and the Sentencing Commission.

Protection for court workers who report misconduct — can sue

No one in the courts could fire, demote, threaten, or harass a worker for helping an inquiry into a judge or staff member. A worker punished for helping could sue for relief.

More about this bill

Federal judges, including Supreme Court justices, would get their own ethics watchdog. The bill sets up an Inspector General (an independent investigator) for the federal courts. The Chief Justice would choose this person after talking with the top leaders of both parties in Congress. The term is 4 years and can be renewed any number of times. The Chief Justice could fire the Inspector General but would have to tell Congress why. The office could look into misconduct by judges and breaks of the Supreme Court's code of conduct. It could also audit the courts and look for waste and fraud. It could demand testimony and records with a subpoena (a legal order to hand them over). For lower-court judges, it would wait until the courts' own complaint process ends or sends the case up. It could not review how a judge ruled. It could not punish any judge either. It would report to the Chief Justice and Congress each year. It would also tell the Attorney General about possible federal crimes. Court workers who help an inquiry would be protected from payback. Most people would see no direct change in daily life. The bill has been introduced in the Senate and sent to its Judiciary Committee.
