Your Money
Teachers whose main job is teaching English learners, and bilingual or dual language immersion teachers, could have up to $17,500 of their federal Stafford loans forgiven, instead of the usual $5,000. They still need five straight years of full-time teaching at a qualifying school, and their school leader must confirm their students match their training.
More about this bill
If you teach students who are still learning English, more of your federal student loans could be forgiven. The limit would rise to $17,500, up from $5,000 today. Teachers in bilingual or dual language immersion classrooms would get the same higher limit. Right now, only some math, science, and special education teachers can get that much. The other rules stay the same. You must teach full-time for five school years in a row at a school that qualifies for the program. Your school's leader must also confirm that your students match your training. The change would start once the bill becomes law. It covers teachers who become eligible after that day. The bill was introduced in the Senate in September 2026. It was sent to the Senate education committee.
